French children's books are scary for kids and adults

Did you know that the French have a reputation for having scary kids books? I guess inventing "ennui" for the toddlers wasn't enough. They have to have existential crises too!

Clockwise from bottom right: My First Nightmare, The Visit from Little Death, The Silent Child, The Weight of Disappointment, The Revenge of the Rabbits, The Official Pompon Girls' Handbook. (I threw in that last one to cheer you up.) Via the Guardian.
